What is a dental crown?
Dental crown is used for restoring a faulty tooth by employing indirect methods. Dental crown is nothing but a cap that covers a damaged tooth. The crown is fitted over the damaged tooth in such a way that it does not look unnatural. Dental crowns are very useful. Not only can they hold in place the different parts of a broken tooth but they can also act as a tooth bridge. Dental crowns are great for covering bad colored teeth and even shapeless teeth. These are just a process of teeth restoration using the tooth caps, which are cemented in such a manner that they cover the teeth completely above the line of the gum. Dental crowns can be used for restoring only those teeth which have moderate damages. Dental crowns cannot be worked upon severely damaged teeth.
Types of dental crowns
Dental crowns can be of different materials. These can be made of metals, porcelain or ceramic. The metal dental crowns are usually made of gold alloy. Many a times base metal alloys like chromium, nickel or palladium are also used. The metal crowns which are considered the strongest are generally used in capping the back teeth. These crowns have the ability to last for more than seven years.
The procedure
Usually before capping a damaged tooth with a dental crown a root canal treatment is done. However, this might not be the case for every patient. In the first stage, the dentist files the tooth and creates a gap for it. Then he will create an impression of the tooth and send it to the lab to get the crown in shape. In the meantime the patient will be a given a plastic crown. It is replaced with the actual one when the crown comes ready.
